“SRI LANKAN LAWYERS (U.K.) TSUNAMI APPEAL” (Charity no. 1108341) was formed under the umbrella of “Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers in the UK (ASLLUK)” to support a wide range of incredible social justice projects in Sri Lanka.
Since the inception of Tsunami Appeal in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, it has supported a number of projects in Sri Lanka. The Tsunami was an environmental disaster. It was the worst catastrophe in living memory in Sri Lanka. 40,000 lives were needlessly lost and unimaginable horror unleashed on thousands of defenceless people. The Tsunami opened the eyes, ears and hearts of man. Since then each year the charity has done its best to support the victims of the tragedy in Sri Lanka irrespective of their race or creed.
Some of the worthy projects carried out included;
- Raising funds to purchase medical equipment for children suffering from cancer in Sri Lanka.
- Raising £10,000 to purchase CRRT lifesaving equipment for the Anuradhapura General Hospital in Sri Lanka to alleviate chronic kidney failure.
- Raising funds to protect the endangered elephants in Sri Lanka
- Raising funds to train young lawyers in Sri Lanka to engage in public interest environmental litigation.
